Exploring the National Intangible Cultural Heritage: Tai O Traditional "Dragonboat Water Parade" Exhibition

2025.05.22 - 2025.07.31

In addition to eating rice dumplings and racing dragon boats during the Tuen Ng Festival in Hong Kong, there is also a traditional custom of "Tai O Dragon Boat Water Parade" in Tai O.

According to legend, over a century ago, a plague struck Tai O. During the Tuen Ng Festival, fishermen gathered deity statues from temples, carried them onto boats and paraded them through waterways to pacify spirits, and the epidemic was then ended. Since then, the "Dragon Boat Water Parade" has become an annual traditional ritual in Tai O fishing village, passing down and inheriting through generations, and inscribed in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

This exhibition, themed on a holistic perspective on community life, introduces the cultural significance of the "Tai O Dragon Boat Water Parade" through the display of text panels, audio-visual programmes, and models. It also explores the deeper meanings of the rituals on human connections with nature, community and supernature with the aims at fostering appreciation, conservation and sustaining the development of this valuable living tradition.

On weekends, a family-friendly "Folding Paper Boat, Creating Dragon Boat" workshop will be organised to complement with the exhibition, inviting visitors of all ages to experience the joy of cultural heritage together.
